2nd Workshop on « Good Radiation Practices in Industry and Research »

« Good Radiation Practices in Industry and Research », Chilton, UK, November 1998

T
he second EAN Workshop was attended by 60 participants from 11 countries with a good mix of operators, health physics experts and regulators; all with interests in the industrial and research sectors. This paper summarises some of the highlights and the recommendations to the European Commission that arose from the discussions.

The 18th issue of the Newsletter presents in its first article the summary and recommendations from the 9th EAN Workshop on “Occupational Exposure to Natural Radiation” (Augsburg, October 2005). The second article presents the conclusions and recommendations from the Seminar on the implementation of Directive 90/641 EURATOM on the radiation protection of outside workers (Luxembourg, November 2005). Then two articles analyse a radiological incident: the analysis of an incident involving Radioactive Lightning Conductors in Croatia becomes the case study n° 18 and the case study n° 19 deals with radionuclide gauges in rough industrial environments.

Finally, the first announcement for the 10th EAN Workshop on “Experience and new developments in implementing ALARA in occupational, public and patient exposures” (Prague, Czech Republic – 12-15 September 2006) is available.

1st Workshop on « ALARA and Decommissioning »

« ALARA and Decommissioning », Saclay, France, December 1997

pdf Download the Summary and Recommendations

Optimisation of radiological protection has been shown to be a routine feature during major decommissioning operations in the nuclear industry sector. ALARA is not only considered as a principle but corresponds also to practices that determine important steps during the planning, the operation and feedback evaluation.

The presentations during the workshop described a wide variety of national approaches which depend on the legal requirements, the availability of funds, the industrial resources and, last but not least, the waste disposal routes in the different European countries. It was also shown that, as far ALARA implementation is concerned, the reality is still far from being ideal everywhere, and that a lot of problems have still to be solved.

If you would like a copy of one presentation, just ask us by e-mail; we will send it to you by post. If you would like to have a copy of the proceedings, they are available at the European Commission in its publication Radiation Protection issue108 ISBN 92-828-7107-X. Issue 17 – August 2005

First of all, the 17th issue of the Newsletter presents the new legal entity of the European ALARA Network. The second paper deals with the implementation of the EC Council Directive 90/641 EURATOM on radiation protection of outside workers following by the announcement of the corresponding EC/DGTREN seminar. Then, the new ICRP draft document on optimisation of protection is presented. The fourth paper summarizes a thesis on optimization of patient doses linked to image quality in vascular radiology. An analysis of a radiological incident concerning a level gauge system becomes the incident case study n° 17. Finally the last announcement and preliminary program of the 9th EAN Workshop in Augsburg are available with the registration form.

The 16th issue of the Newsletter presents in its first article the summary and recommendations from the 8th EAN Workshop on "Occupational Radiological Protection Control and Self Assessment" (Uppsala, September 2004). Another paper presents a summary of the feedback from the research reactors sub-network after 3 years of experience. The European Committee of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists presents here the main results of concern for radiological protection of an international survey they performed dealing with training of radiographers. An Analysis of a Radiological Incident, which occurred in a textile treatment plant in France, becomes the incident case study n°16.

Finally the first announcement for the 9th EAN Workshop on "Occupational Exposure to natural Radiation"- to be held in Augsburg- Germany, October 2005 " is available with the Application Form.

The 15th issue presents the main results of two European studies funded by the Commission after recommendations from the EAN:

  • The EURAIDE project devoted to feedback experience from radiological incidents; and
  • The SMOPIE project devoted to internal exposure optimisation.

It gives also the opportunity to present the first results of the new European studies on occupational exposure (ESOREX) as well as a new project: the European Platform on Training and education in Radiation Protection (EUTERP).

Issue 14 – March 2004

The 14th issue of the Newsletter presents in its first article the summary and recommendations from the 7th EAN Workshop on "Decommisioning and Site remediation" (Arnhem, October 2003) answering the 4 questions:

  • Are we really implementing ALARA in decommisioning and remediation?
  • What is the role of the Stakeholders in the the decision making?
  • Are there factors that are specific to the non-nulear sector?
  • Are they still further needs for external dose prediction tools?

The second paper presents some recommendations from the International Conference on National Infrastructures for Radiation Safety (Rabat, September 2003).
The third paper presents the new Challenges for the European ALARA Network. An Analysis of a Radiological Incident concerning the Transport of gauges from a refurbished brewery becomes the incident case study n° 14, and a presentation is proposed of the future European Radiation Protection Training and Education Platform. Finally in the second announcement for the 8th EAN Workshop on "Occupational Radiological Protection Control and Self Assessment" is available with the Preliminary Programme and the Application Form.

The 13th issue of the Newsletter presents in its editorial a first assessment of the European ALARA Network. The first article shows how it is intended by Authorities to incoporate radiological protection features at the design stage of the future NPP planned to be built in Finland. The second article gives an overview of the EC funded IDEA project on the integration of new internal monitoring procedures and techniques into routine monitoring programmes. The third article is devoted to the presentation by the French Radiological Protection and Safety Authority of a proposal for a classification scale of radiological incidents and accidents occurring outside the nuclear sector (ie. not covered by INES). The summary of the SRP Meeting "ALARP: Principles and Practices" held in Oxford last April, follows as the fourth article. The now "traditional" description of an incident is also inside this issue. Finally, this Newsletter includes the first announcement of the 7th EAN Workshop ("Decommissioning and Site Remediation", held in Arnhem, the Netherlands, 29-31 October 2003) and the first announcement of the 8th one ("Occupational Radiological Protection Control through Inspection and Self Assessment", in Uppsala, Sweden, 22-24 September 2004).

The 12th issue of the Newsletter presents the very comprehensive action plan that has been developed since 1993 by the Consejo de Securidad Nuclear (the Spanish regulatory body) to reduce doses from industrial gamma-radiography facilities. An article provided by the IAEA describes a new system for categorising radioactive sources, based on the dangers posed from deterministic risks. A second document on the management of NORMs (see Newsletter 11) presents here the position the Czech regulatory body. Finally, we will have our 7th Workshop in Arnhem (the Netherlands) next October, seven years after the first one devoted to the same topic: decommissioning.
